Umrah, one of the sacred pilgrimages in Islam, holds profound significance for millions of Muslims worldwide.
Derived from the Arabic word ‘I’timaar’, meaning ‘a visit’, Umrah is a spiritual journey undertaken by Muslims to the holy city of Makkah, located in Saudi Arabia.
It involves a series of rituals performed with utmost sincerity and piety, symbolizing the unity, humility, and submission of believers to their Creator.
While not obligatory like the Hajj pilgrimage, Umrah remains a deeply cherished act of devotion and worship.
The Umrah rituals commence with entering the state of Ihram, a state of purity and spiritual consecration, marked by the donning of simple white garments for men and modest attire for women.
This act symbolizes equality and unity among all pilgrims, irrespective of their socio-economic status or nationality.
The rituals of Umrah include Tawaf, the circumambulation of the Kaaba, performed seven times in an anti-clockwise direction as a demonstration of the eternal rotation of the celestial bodies as they praise Allah.
These rituals serve as powerful reminders of faith, perseverance, and reliance on Allah’s mercy and providence.
Following Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa’i, the brisk walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating the noble actions of Hajar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim, in search of water for her infant son, Isma’il.
Preparing for Umrah involves careful consideration of both physical and spiritual aspects to ensure a smooth and fulfilling pilgrimage experience. Below are tips and advice on physical, spiritual, and logistical preparations for Umrah, including a checklist of items to carry, vaccinations required, and spiritual preparations.
Performing Umrah is a deeply spiritual and fulfilling experience for Muslims around the world. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to perform Umrah, broken down into individual steps:
Begin by making a sincere intention (niyyah) to perform Umrah. This intention should come from the heart, expressing your desire to fulfill this act of worship solely for the sake of Allah.
Take a ritual bath (ghusl) to purify yourself before entering the state of Ihram.
Men should wear two seamless white cloths—one wrapped around the waist and the other draped over the upper body. Women can wear any modest and loose-fitting clothing that covers their entire body, excluding their faces and hands.
Upon wearing Ihram, recite the Talbiyah, a supplication declaring your readiness and intention to perform Umrah. The Talbiyah is: “Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik. Labbaik la sharika laka labbaik. Innal hamda wan ni’mata laka wal mulk. Laa sharika lak.” Translation: “Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner.”
Upon reaching the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, proceed towards the Kaaba.
Start Tawaf by touching or pointing at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) if possible. This marks the starting point for Tawaf.
Perform Tawaf by circumambulating the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction.
During Tawaf, recite various supplications and prayers, or make personal prayers to Allah, expressing gratitude, seeking forgiveness, and asking for blessings.
Upon completing the seven rounds of Tawaf, perform two Raka’ahs of optional prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim, if possible.
Proceed to Safa Hill and ascend it. Face the Kaaba and recite the supplication: “Inn-as-Safa wal Marwata min Sha’a’irillah.” Translation: “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.”
Begin walking briskly between the hills of Safa and Marwah, following the path designated for Sa’i. Men should walk briskly between the green markers and walk normally at other times.
While walking, recite supplications and prayers, or engage in personal remembrance and reflection.
Upon completing seven circuits (going back and forth between Safa and Marwah seven times), proceed to the next step.
After completing Sa’i, men have the option to perform Halq (complete shaving of the head) or Taqsir (trimming the hair). Shaving the head is preferable but not obligatory. If shaving, ensure all hair is removed from the entire head.
Women are required to trim a small portion of their hair, about the length of a fingertip, from the bottom of their hair. This is done to symbolize the completion of Umrah.
